Block the feed, not your friends. How blockers on iPhone work, the free way to do it, and the option in between.
Instagram locked. Messages open.
On iPhone, every Instagram blocker locks the whole app, because Apple's Screen Time, which all of them use, works on whole apps and websites. That includes Screen Time itself, Opal, Brick and one sec. Blocking the whole app works, but it also blocks your DMs, which is usually why people turn it off. To block only the feed, you need two things: a calm version of Instagram that keeps messages and leaves out Reels, and the real app locked so the shortcut back is gone.
Apple lets blockers lock apps, categories and websites. It doesn't let them reach inside an app and close one tab. So a blocker can't take Reels and leave your messages. On Android, some apps can, using accessibility features; iOS doesn't allow that.

Instagram's website without Reels or suggestions.
Friends and DMs stay. The real app costs a break.
The whole app closes on a schedule or limit.
Based on each app's own App Store listing, November 2026.
Screen Time can do a full lock on its own. It takes three minutes.
The catch: it blocks your messages too. And if you know the code, the block lasts until the first bad evening. More in Screen Time that actually holds.
Not with Screen Time or app blockers like Opal, because iPhone blockers can only lock the whole app. You need a separate, calm version of Instagram that keeps messages, and the real app locked. That's what Off the Hook does.
Not inside the real Instagram app. On Android, some apps hide Reels using accessibility features, but iOS doesn't allow that. On iPhone, Reels-free Instagram means using Instagram's website in a filtered app.
Yes: Screen Time. Set a one-minute limit on Instagram, add instagram.com, and lock it with a passcode someone else chooses. It blocks everything, including your messages.
No. Blocking the app on your phone doesn't change your account. Friends can still message you; you just won't see it until you open Instagram.
Go to their profile, tap the three dots at the top right, and tap Block. That's Instagram's own feature and it has nothing to do with screen time.
Off the Hook is coming to iPhone. Get one text the day it's out.
One text when we launch. Nothing else.
